Windows installation

1. Install Quake 3

As you probably already know, CPMA is a mod for the game Quake 3 Arena, which means you need to have the game installed and patched before you do anything else. Installing Quake 3 is pretty straight forward: you pop the Quake 3 cd in the driver and use the game's installer. The default installation path should be something like C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena.

2. Download and install the latest Quake 3 patch

Quake 3 Arena 1.32 Windows Point Release is required: PlanetQuake3.net
FileShack.com
id software FTP

The updated 1.32c game binary (Quake3.exe) which is a security fix. However, you can connect to servers without it, making 1.32c optional. It can be downloaded various places:

PlanetQuake3.net
FileShack.com
massman.dk

2.1 Download Challenge Quake 3 exe

It's highly recommended that you download Challenge Quake 3 exe and use it instead of the default Quake3.exe. CPMA has certain features that require cnq3 and is generally way less buggy than id's exe.

Challenge Quake 3 exe

3. Download the CPMA files

CPMA comes in two parts: the mod files and the map pack. Both parts are contained in two seperate .zip files that you can download from here:

Latest CPMA ~8mb
CPMA Map Collection (116 mb)

4. Install the CPMA files

  • CPMA files in \cpma, MAP files in \baseq3
  • Unzip the file cpma-nomaps.zip in your Quake 3 directory with folder extraction enabled. If you've used the default path when you installed Quake 3, this should be "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena". This will create a folder called cpma with other files in it. Again, if you've used the default Quake 3 install path, the new folder should be "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\cpma". Make sure you have installed it in the right directory, otherwise it won't work.
  • Open the cpma-mappack-full.zip and extract its contents in \baseq3. This is a standard directory that is created when you first install the game. It's located inside the Quake 3 directory. If you've used the default installation path, that should be "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3". Do not install the files in "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\cpma", they have to be in \baseq3.

This concludes the CPMA installation procedure. If you start Quake 3 and choose Mods and CPMA from the main menu, CPMA should load and you will be ready to play.

You can also make a shortcut to start cpma directly. First make a shortcut to quake3.exe (Rightclick on it and chose "Create shortcut" ) Then rightclick on your shortcut and chose Properties, and you will see the path to the quake3.exe, Eg. "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe". Then you add +set fs_game cpma after quake3.exe, so it will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game cpma. Now you are done. Save the file and rename the shortcut to CPMA and you are ready to launch the game.
